The Ounce: A Box of Chocolates

Welcome to another installment of The Ounce, an occasional series from the Preventive Programs group within Preservation Services about safeguarding library materials.

An 1866 chromolithograph of Josiah Webb & Co. Manufacturers of Webb & Twombley’s Premium Chocolate and Cocoa displays many types of storage containers for chocolate—wooden crates, cardboard boxes, and cloth sacks.  While we don’t expect chocolate to hang around long, library collections can benefit from well-fitted enclosures made of archival materials.

Preservation Services’ Collections Care lab in Widener Library includes a robust enclosures-fabrication program. Check out our Enclosures Wiki (HarvardKey required) to learn more about services provided by the Enclosures Lab, as well as types of enclosures, information on standard and custom boxes, and working with outside vendors.
