The Ounce: An Antidote to Oops! Careful Handling Training

Farcical print of a group of people in Victorian dress playing croquet using books as wickets

Using a book as a croquet wicket may be fun but is not good for the binding. Careful handling of library materials is an important part of preservation; helping to prevent damage for current and future researchers. In-person handling training has always been part of Harvard Library Preservation Services. In 2020 we were looking for ways to continue this training virtually. We began creating short videos covering basic and more complex handling techniques, from placing books on foam supports, to removing folders from a box, to demonstrating how to unfold a map. We now use these videos for our in-person trainings as pre-work, allowing participants more time to practice techniques and refresh their training on their own time.

All of the Careful Handling videos are on Vimeo with links on our website so you don’t get yourself in a sticky wicket next time you are handling library collections.
