Preservation Services is an enthusiastic contributor to Harvard’s J-Term, offering a variety of workshops to students, staff, and faculty. Participants get to exercise their creativity while gaining not only an introduction to sound bookbinding practice, but new insight into the books which make up the library’s vast collections. Step-by-step instruction guides each participant to a finished book. This year, we offered our popular Japanese Bookbinding workshop. Using traditional tools and materials such as kozo paper and silk thread, we made the toji, a classic pocket-style binding, 100s of which are found in Harvard’s library collections.

  ハーバード大学の蔵書保存サービスは、冬学期に積極的に参加して、学生やスタッフ、教職員にさまざまなワークショップを提供しています。参加者は正しい製本技法の実習だけでなく、図書館の膨大な蔵書について知見を広めながら、各自の独創性を発揮することができます。ステップ・バイ・ステップの指導で、参加者は各々製本を完成できます。

  今年は、人気の和綴じ（和とじ）本ワークショップを開きました。昔ながらの道具と楮紙（こうぞがみ）や絹糸のような材料を使って、伝統的な袋綴じ本を作りました。ハーバード大学図書館の蔵書にはこの種の和綴じ本が数百冊あります。
